A home gym can be as big or small as you want it to be and on this page i will show you how to create your very own home gym for all budget types aswell as looking at some great home workouts you can do.
The two most important factors to consider when creating your own home gym workouts is:
You can get a great workout without spending any money at all doing bodyweight exercises and making use of house hold items to help you in your exercises.
Where are you going to train?
This is probably the most important question you need to ask yourself. Do you have a spare room, empty garage, big garden or just a large space you can set aside for working out? The size of the space you need depends on the equipment you want in your gym.

When I first started training the only floor space that was available to me was in my daughters bedroom. There was enough room on the floor to do all of the basic exercises and set up a weights bench. Imagine doing a workout whilst being surrounded by posters of Disney princess and teddy bears? At first this used to distract me but I soon learnt to block out distractions and just listen to the music playing on my mp3 player.
The place you choose should be free from distractions, its no good working out in the living room when you have family around, they are trying to talk to you and watching telly. You need a space where you can be left alone for the duration of your workout so you can give it 100%.
Determine exactly how much space is available to you. Measure it out so that you not only have enough space to accommodate your current plan, but also for any potential future equipment growth. Also, don't forget to consider floor to ceiling space. Make sure it's a space that will be pleasurable for you to work out in.
You are going to want a space that is not going to get to hot and is well ventilated. The use of a fan or open a few windows, the more you work out the hotter you will get and it is important to keep cool.

What equipment do you need?
This will depend on your training program and the results you want to achieve. I have seen people with home gyms that take up entire rooms with treadmills, smith machines, and others that consist of a bench and a barbell. You can get a great workout with just a set of dumbbells and a bench, any other equipment is a bonus. A dip / pull up station is a great asset and are relatively an inexpensive piece of equipment consider the number of exercises you can do with it.
My best investment I have ever made was a pull up bar that fits over my door frame. It was inexpensive and allows me to do pull ups and hanging leg raises which are great exercises.
Other things to consider for your home gym workouts are kettlebells, medicine balls and swiss balls. There is so many different kinds of equipment you can get it would be impossible to name them all.
The picture on the right shows an example of an all in one home gym. These vary in prices and often range from $300 -$4000+. These home fitness stations provide a good variety of home gym workouts however you are limited in some way to certain exercises.
Home fitness stations often take up a large amount of floor space and require somewhere permenant to be placed. You cant exactly fold it up and place it under a bed.
If a home fitness station is something that you are considering then you should check out my quick guide to home workout equipment.
Of course you do not need any equipment and can get a great workout from bodyweight exercises.
Each of the workouts on this page and thoughout this site expolains excatly what equipment you need if any in order to complete the workout.
What Makes A Good Home Workout Plan
Determine a realistic budget
Write down exactly what you're willing to invest in your home gym. Stay in a range that is realistic for you (i.e. $50-$200) Exercise equipment is a good example of getting what you pay for. Your equipment needs to be sturdy and durable and come with a warranty in writing.
Whatever you purchase, make sure that it is scaleable so that you can add to it to meet your future fitness needs. For example, you wouldn't want to purchase a weight bench that can only support 40lbs if you can eventually use 80lbs. Consider buying quality used equipment from a reputable distributor. This may help stretch your budget further than expected.
Most places like walmart or the internet have low cost fitness equipment for sale. An important factor to consider is making sure that if you do buy equipment you can fit it in your workout space. Most benchs are foldable and can easily be tucked away under a bed or in a cupboard when you finish your home gym workouts.
Top Tip
Dont just go for the cheapest equipment possible as this would last you long and is often cheap for a reason. You are better off saving up for a bit and buying something that will last and think of it as an investment.
My Guide To Home Fitness Equipment
As i have said before you dont need a whole room full of equipment and the home gym workouts featured below focus on working out with specific pieces of equipment to suit all budgets.
No Equipment Needed
In this little workout you will get a full body cardio workout which does not use any equipment. The only thing you will need is floor space and a timer or stop watch. Most people have these already in their kitchens or as a feature on your mobile phones.
Which ever of the home gym workouts you choose remember that to get results you need to follow your program consistantly without missing loads of sessions and without making excuses not to train. Home training takes alot of dedication and determination but if you can focus on your workouts and on your goals then i know that you will make great gains.
