The abdominal's are one of the easiest body parts to train at home and the reason for this is that you do not need any equipment or a lot of space to do most abdominal exercises.
The truth about training your abdominal's is that it doesn't matter if you do 1000 sit ups a day, you will not get a flat stomach if your body fat percentage is too high.
There is an argument regarding abdominal training. Some people believe that by doing home abdominal workouts and training the
abs directly you will burn fat from them (spot reduction). Other people say that this is simply not true and there is no such thing as spot reduction. What do i believe? Myth or not i am a firm believer that if you combine your abdominal training with fat burning cardio then you will get the best of both worlds.
Lets have a little look at the make up of the abdominal muscles. Don't worry im not going to bore you with science just the basic facts so you understand how to develop a great set of abdominal muscles.
There are 3 main parts which make up the abdominal region and the aim of our home abdominal workouts is to work all of these parts.
The rectus abdominis is the long muscle which extends along the front of your stomach joining your chest to the groin area. Its this muscle that is responsible for the six pack abs look. The basic function of this muscle is to draw the sternum towards the pelvis. In other words to sit up.
The external oblique's are the muscles at the side of your torso and their basic function is to help you rotate. Its these muscles that get covered by those dreaded love handles which can be a stubborn area to burn fat from.
The intercostals are two thin plans of muscular and tendon fibres which take up the space between your ribs. They help lift the ribs and draw them together providing flexibility to your chest.

Abdominal exercises can be grouped into 3 main categories and it is important that when doing your home abdominal workouts you are working your stomach from all different angles.
The upper abs are usually targeted by traditional sit up and crunching exercises.
The lower abs are engaged when doing exercises such as leg raises and reverse crunches.
The oblique's and intercostals are worked with exercises such as side bends and twists.
As i have said before the abs are a great muscle group to train at home as the exercises are relatively simple and require no equipment and you don't even need a spotter.
If you are holding an excess amount of body fat then no matter how hard you train your abdominal muscles you will not see any results as the muscle will not be able to show through the layer of fat. Typically a six pack will not be visible unless your body fat level is below 12%. This obviously varies from person to person but gives you an idea of what to aim for.

If you want to get a flat firm stomach then the quickest way to do this is to combine a whole body workout which should include weight training and cardio work with home abdominal workouts and a healthy eating plan. The reason that this method is so effective is that the diet plan helps you to loose unwanted fat, the cardio and weight training burns extra calories and tones the entire body and the abdominal workouts firm and tighten the abs.
